Nearly 8,000 people die each year on our nation's roads in crashes involving teen drivers. Despite research showing the lifesaving benefits of a comprehensive Graduate Driver Licensing program, most state laws are missing key GDL components.  Passage of a strong, comprehensive GDL law in every state has become the goal of insurance, consumer, safety, and medical groups working together.

Years ago we faced a similar challenge in encouraging uniform state adoption of a 21 minimum drinking age.  It took federal leadership to compel states to act. As a result, every state now has this law, and tens of thousands of lives have been saved.  Following this successful example, we need federal legislation to encourage and accelerate state adoption of strong, comprehensive GDL laws.  The STANDUP Act would achieve that goal by encouraging every state to adopt a strong, comprehensive GDL program within a reasonable timeframe.

A new coalition has been formed-- the Saferoads4teens Coalition -- by insurance, consumer, safety, medical and other organizations whose support, involvement, and commitment will help advance the STANDUP Act to passage.
